About Clifford Beck
I have been practicing the art of photography since the age of six, when my grandfather gave me a Stekey camera. Many generations of cameras, and years of experience later, I consider myself a "Street Photographer" owing to my interest in people and their environments. The natural child curiosity that drove my sense of discovery then, now directs my lens as well as my interest. I find emotions created by people, architecture, children, animals, even social events, and respond to them through my lens. Black and White imagery is my favored genre'; it derives from early admiration of such notable photographers as Ansel Adams and Minor White, while my candid style comes from others, like Dorthea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Edward Steichen.
Through my photography, my intent is to capture the emotions I experience when viewing my surroundings, and to convey those same emotions to the viewer through a photographic rendering. In earlier years, perfection of tonality were my challenge for my prints, however, I am currently drawn toward more abstraction in my color images, and stronger contrast in my monochromatic renderings. Where I once preferred the subtlety of tonality, I now find myself drawn more toward the strength of contrast. I still search for a single voice for recognition in my work, but, perhaps, that is a "fools errand." As I observe the world surrounding me, I see many subjects beckoning, each having a different voice; sometimes more than one. I hear those "voices" directing me as I encounter that "decisive moment" and choose to press upon my shutter's release. My desired goal is to have that image's rendering repeat to the observer what I had heard.
